DNA sonification for public engagement in bioinformatics

Abstract Objective Visualisation methods, primarily color-coded representation of sequence data, have been a predominant means DNA data. Algorithmic conversion data to sound—sonification—represents an alternative that uses different range human sensory perception. We propose sonification has value for public engagement with information because it potential be entertaining as well informative. conduct preliminary work explore the in bioinformatics. apply simple technique DNA, which each base is represented by specific note. Additionally, beat may added indicate codon boundaries or musical effect. report brief analysis from events we conducted featured this method sonification. Results on use at two events. Sonification bioinformatics, both and attract audience drop-in stand. also discuss further directions research integration into bioinformatics education.
